1. ‘A’
is used before a singular countable noun which starts with a consonant
sound…. (b, c, d,…..) –a ball/ a cat /a desk
2. ‘A’
is used with certain words beginning with ‘u’ and ‘e’ but has the ‘Y’ sound
(a unit/ a uniform/ a university…)
3. ‘An’
is used before a singular countable noun which starts with vowel sound. (an
apple/an elephant/ an orange/ an egg…..)
4. ‘An’
is used before noun which has a silent ‘h’, where the ‘h’ is not pronounced
when speaking. (an hour/an honest boy/ an honorable man)
5. ‘The’
is used when refer to something again. (I have a pen. The pen was given to me
by my father on my birthday)
6. ‘The’
is used to refer to a particular person or thing. ( This is the girl who
helped me carry the books just now.)
